Richard Crandall

Richard is a California based artist living in San Diego.  Benefiting from having generations of family involved in the arts, he is fully entrenched in his craft.  Although recently retired from a career in healthcare, his passion from a young age has always been art and creativity.  His works have been featured in countless art shows and he has had his pieces used as the call to artists for the national show “Orange is the New Black.”   He has had multiple installations with the Scripps Corporation, and has been commissioned by private collectors.  While his studies have been lifelong, he has spent time in France, Santa Fe, NM, Sausalito, CA,  and most notably in the San Diego region under the tutelage of accomplished masters.  He is an avid traveler and his appreciation for world culture is subtly incorporated into his works.

While always evolving, his pieces defy simple categorization. At times echoing abstract expressionist sentiment, his use of shapes, light, architecture, archaeology and excavation give a mystery to his work.  His pieces are multilayered with each pass of medium contributing to the story and feel of the painting.  Editing, scraping, and peeling away these layers are just as important as laying them down.  What comes from this pushing and pulling is a palate that is rich, but also has a minimalist quality to the work.  His process always gives a nod to history and frequently can be seen as an homage to early mid-century artists from whom we have learned so much.
